On the show, Malcolm X is a popular public figure in Harlem who preaches the self-sufficiency taught in Islam, motivated by the deterioration of a neighborhood that has succumbed to drug addiction. With Johnson’s guns and Malcolm X’s soldiers from the Nation of Islam, the pair take on the Genovese family to regain control of Harlem. Malcolm X (Nigél Thatch) and Johnson (Forest Whitaker) make a deal. ![]() There is not much known about the real-life relationship between the two mobsters, but it’s very possible that the two, who both worked with the Genovese crime family in Harlem, crossed paths. On the show, Gigante is portrayed as an eccentric figure who refuses to cooperate with Johnson. But it was all discovered to be a long con to avoid jail time, and in the 1990s he was sent to federal prison on racketeering and conspiracy charges. Later in life, he was known as the “Odd Father” for his strange behavior, which included wandering the streets in a bathrobe. Born in 1928 in Manhattan, Gigante got the nickname “Chin” from his mother, who would call him “Chinzeeno.” A former boxer, Gigante worked his way up from a driver to an enforcer/hitman to a top boss of the Genovese crime family. Gigante has long been considered one of New York City’s most i nfamous mobsters. Picking up where he left off, he once again reigned until his death in 1968 at the age of 62, of heart failure while eating at the neighborhood’s Wells Restaurant. In 1963, Johnson returned home to Harlem and was greeted by a parade. There are rumors that he helped orchestrate the 1962 escape of three prisoners by arranging a boat to whisk the trio away, an especially impressive feat considering Alcatraz was known as America’s most secure prison. Even while in prison, Johnson’s legend grew. ![]() Although he maintained that he was framed, Johnson was sentenced to 15 years in the infamous Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary in California. In 1952, at the height of his reign, Johnson was arrested for selling heroin. He was also known for his skills in chess. He was also known to be well-read, and earned the nickname “The Professor” because of his love of books and philosophy. Over the years, Johnson expanded to the narcotics trade and was eventually crowned the kingpin of Harlem.Īlthough Johnson was known to be a brutal gangster, he still portrayed himself as a man of the people, often giving back to his community. This alliance boosted Johnson’s profile as one of the first black gangsters to successfully work with the Italian mob. After Shultz was killed in a hit by infamous gangster Charles “Lucky” Luciano, Johnson teamed up with the Italian mafia and formed an alliance that would last for decades. ![]() ![]() There are supply caches, and rugged mountain terrains to be explored and mysteries to be unearthed and to dwell upon. I’d be honest to say that once I started to play I couldn’t keep the controller down for 5 hours. It’s a simple story set in the wilderness of the Wyoming jungles in the summer of 1989 (oh, the 80s!) where you play Henry, a volunteer managing a lookout and exploring the vast green landscapes through some help from your colleague (or boss) Delilah, and through a walky-talky which is the prime object of interaction, you seek and sort out the mysteries of this adventurous journey. Basically, a nice break from the complexity of hardcore gaming. The best, and perhaps the most vivid characteristic of Firewatch is that it contains no fierce-looking villains, long & stretched boss fights which you need to finish off before progressing the story or even treasure hunts, some qualities which today’s gamers have come to endorse. It could have been a biographical account of some hiker which came alive on screen as an adventure. (If you are inclined, Firewatch has a Reddit community too.)įirewatch is a short, and an enjoyable affair. ![]() I had read positive reviews on Firewatch so when it became available on the PSN season sale for CAD12.99 I decided to pick it! The other point of writing this post is because I felt this game hasn’t really been discussed a lot, while we continue to endorse some bigger titles this one deserves its rightful place too. The game which has summoned my inert nostalgia is called Firewatch by Campo Santo, a brilliant indie genre par excellence, of course, set in the 80s, and so reminiscent of that awesome decade. Needless to say, whichever part of the world you were born, you weren’t immune from the razzmatazz of the tech and culture boom in the 80s. On the other side, gaming, as it were, became a growing alternative to TV & movie entertainment with titles like Super Mario Bros, Tetris, Donkey Kong, which are today regarded as cult classics. It feels slightly awkward, that as I bid goodbye to 2016 I’m taking a journey back into the 80s! Taking a peek through that magical decade, the MTV revolution had forced itself on a 24/7 TV, Hollywood was reinventing itself with sci-fi movies such as ‘E.T.’ and ‘Back To The Future’ series, the VCRs, audio cassettes, boomboxes, had stepped into our homes as the next generation technology and also redefining a long-term alliance between entertainment, youth and pop culture. |
